Leishmania
Leishmania is a disease transmitted by sandflies. It is a disease that is unfortunately common in the south of Spain. It is a serious illness that can be life-threatening to your pet. Your pet can become a carrier of the disease after being stung by a sandfly. The disease can manifest itself much later, from a month to years.
If something happens that affects your pet's immune system (stress, illness) the Leishmania can flare up.
Symptoms of Leishmania are: lethargy, bald patches on the skin, cuts and sores that do not heal properly, eye infections, nosebleeds, problems with joints and kidney problems / failure.
Prevention is extremely important! First, your pet can be vaccinated against developing the disease. This vaccination is required annually. Before a first vaccination it is necessary to determine whether your pet is not already a carrier by means of a quick test. Preventing being bitten by the sandfly is also important by wearing a special collar. This also works equally against other insects.
